Choosing a Doctor.
Choosing any kind of Doctor can be very difficult. As children, most of us were taught to do what the Doctor told us -- this ingrained acceptance can lead us to accept treatment that is not right for us. We encourage you to always ask questions and get to know as much about your Doctor as you can, before you put your health care in their hands. Any Chiropractor should be willing to provide a free consultation in order to discuss any and all questions you might have. Asking to see their credentials may also help make you feel more secure with your Doctor. While experience is very helpful, we all had to start somewhere -- sometimes it is better to go with a Doctor with less experience but has a better "bedside manner", than an experienced Doctor who may not listen as well or take your needs into account. Belonging to a provincial or local organization isn't any indication of a Doctor's abilities, it simply means they paid their membership dues. Make a call to the Provincial Chiropractic Board and find out if the Doctor is licensed. Post graduate training can be an indicator of a Doctor's ability and possibly their area of specialization. Referrals from someone you know can be a good way to begin. Otherwise, look in a phone book, drive by the place, ask for a tour and a talk. Mostly, ask lots of questions, find out their style and approach to treatment, find out their understanding of Chiropractic's place in overall health care. From the way they respond to you and the answers they provide to your questions, you should be able to tell if someone is a safe choice.

Maintaining good health & reversing the damage done.
Changes in the body occur over time. When we add the incidents of accident, poor posture, static positions at work, and bad diet, we are making things very difficult for our bodies to continue unaffected. The human body is a biological machine. And all machines need some degree of maintenance care in order to function at optimum levels. We do this with our cars, but for some reason we seem to neglect what is even more important -- our own health. Preventative maintenance can drastically reduce most of the degenerative disease processes occurring in our country today. If we don't believe in natural health principles, and basic cause and effect principles, we will have much bigger problems much sooner than they should be occurring. I'm often reminded of that old Fram oil filter commercial, where the mechanic tells the guy whose car he is servicing, "...you can pay me now, or you can pay me later" -- now, of course means a little bit of cost and effort, later means several times as much in cost and pain.

Be educated about your own body & health.
Chiropractic is a preventative and maintenance form of health care, and acts very much like a catalyst to help the body heal itself. With adjustments, various therapies, massages, etc., the body responds in remarkable ways. Of course, as with any profession, there are Doctors out there who are more interested in your money, than your health. If you haven't received a thorough explanation of what you are receiving in the way of treatment, one which satisfies you, then you should consider finding another Chiropractor. Unless you understand what is going on and why, you will simply be giving your health care over to another person rather than becoming a part of the process. The more you understand about your own body, the more you can do to promote your own good health.
