Limiting your spine's mobility causes damage.

To get a better understanding of how limiting your spine's mobility causes damage to it, let's consider the analogy of a broken arm. A broken arm requires a cast for approximately 6 weeks. After the cast is removed, we immediately notice that the arm has shrunk in size and it has a certain degree of stiffness in the joint area. Reconditioning will of course bring the arm back to normal.
Now, if we look at the mechanism by which these conditions developed, we will see that the simple act of immobilization prevented the normal range of motion of the joint from operating, and prevented normal muscular activity. In the same way, being seated a desk, driving in your car, etc., any sedentary activity that keeps your spine from having normal regular motion will affect the condition of your spine and make it susceptible to other injuries and damage. The damage then of course further affects your spine's mobility, causing everything to continue on a downward spiral.
